Tension Troubles?

Jan 09, 2024

You're loving the process of basket weaving. You picked out the perfect colors, you followed the videos with ease, and you even easily added that cute little knot on top. But you've gotten to the end of your basket and you're wondering... why is my basket so loose and floppy?!

While a floppy basket is still a great basket, it's not ideal for passing those dinner rolls around the table, am I right?

Tension is one of those things that can't be taught. It's learned through touch and experience. You've probably heard me say, "it's like tying shoes." But even that phrase is debatable because everyone wears their shoes differently!

So, if this is you, and your left with a floppy basket, don't despair! Here's a few things you can try for the next one.

1. Pull a little tighter next time. I know this is obvious, and I feel silly even mentioning it, but it had to be said :D

2. Reduce the number of coils between each stitch. Try 3 coils, instead of 4.

3. If you are using a 4mm string, try using a 3mm string.

Just remember, a floppy basket is still a basket, and a beautiful one at that! Their softer look and feel is great for setting on a shelf or in the middle of a coffee table.

I hope this helps you find the perfect tension!
