Recycled T-Shirt Yarn... Is It a Good Choice For Baskets?
Jul 23, 2024If you are in the crafting space you may be seeing a lot of promotion around recycled t-shirt yarn to be used for your projects.
The look and feel is so smooth and soft, but I was skeptical to use it for baskets because of the stretch factor.
I am a curious person and I love to have a well stocked supply closet, so I ordered a few rolls anyway and gave it a go.
I can confirm, it's AWESOME!
I think what I love the most about it is how user friendly it is. It's great for beginners and kids especially. It doesn't twist and kink as much as macramé string, and the stretch in the fabric creates a pretty tight basket if you pull it as you coil.
I tend to be a tight coiler so it worked well for me. However, beginners and kids tend to coil loose, which might not be ideal. So take special note to pull tighter than you might think.
At about $10/roll, it's also super budget friendly!
Will I be making the switch from macramé string to t-shirt yarn?
Nope.
While there are many aspects of it that I love, I still love the look and feel of macramé string. The single twisted macramé string is still my top choice for it's soft feel and delicate appearance, and a must for doing my favorite Fringe basket.
You can shop for my favorites here at Valley Basket Co
Where do I get my recycled t-shirt yarn?
So far I've only tried the yarn from Ganxxet, and I was quite pleased and definitely recommend. The only problem is they sell out quickly which makes it unreliable at times.
Here is the direct link, and as always, use code aliciathecrafter at checkout for 10% off your order!
If Ganxxet is sold out, a simple Google search will bring up other websites.
