Material Mastery: choosing the right one for the job

Jan 09, 2024

Whether you are busy basket weaving yet or not, you've probably wondered what materials are needed in basket weaving. Although you can really let your creativity fly, I do have some tips on the various materials available.

Raffia

This ancient technique of basket weaving traditionally uses dried grass, or raffia. While many artists create the most beautiful baskets with this material, I didn't find it beginner friendly at all. But that's just me!

Yarn & Fabric

Yarn can be a good choice, and you likely already have some on hand. But you'll need to take note of the thickness. If it's too thin you'll be working on that basket for a very long time, and if it's too thick you may find that it makes your basket lumpy and uneven.

Fabric works great and with the many pattern and color choices, you can create some really sweet baskets. If you cut or rip the fabric, please note it will fray. That's OK! But if you don't like that look, then you'll want to bring out your sewing machine and finish the ends.

Be sure that the yarn or fabric you choose is not stretchy.

Braided Cords & Twine

Braided cords and twine also work and create very neat looking baskets! However, the difficulty with these materials is that they kink up really easily as you work them into the basket. You'll just need to stop frequently to smooth out the cord.

Ropes

Ropes don't do well when they are coiled and for that reason I never choose this material.

Single Twisted Cotton Cord

If you've been following me for a while, or you're in the course, you already know that my favorite material is macramé single twist cotton cord, but did you know why it's my favorite?

  1. it's soft and flexible and doesn't kink as much as braided cords

  2. it loosens it's twist to make a wonderful broad string to cover the piping cord really well

  3. comes in a wide variety of colors

Just remember, quality matters with this one, which is why I skip what's available in the big box craft stores. Bobbiny, made in Poland, is the best quality in my opinion and my definite go-to. If Bobbiny is not available near you, an internet search may come up with other great options in your area. Choose size 3mm.

How much do you need? One roll will make about 1.5 baskets, depending on basket size.
